First Batch of Electrified Patrol Boats for the Jiangsu Section of the Yangtze River Delivered
Nanjing, January 29 (China News Service) (Reporter Zhu Xiaoying) — On the 28th, the first batch of five patrol boats retrofitted with electric propulsion for the Jiangsu section of the Yangtze River were delivered in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu. The retrofitting project for this batch of patrol boats is one of China’s first pilot projects to systematically advance the electrification of government vessels.
The retrofitted maritime patrol vessels will completely phase out traditional diesel engines in favor of a pure battery-powered DC propulsion system. Equipped with a 1,964-kilowatt-hour lithium iron phosphate battery and two permanent magnet synchronous variable-frequency propulsion motors, a single charge can meet the vessels’ full-day cruising and law enforcement needs.
Sea trial data shows that all performance metrics of the five patrol boats have significantly improved, with cabin noise levels reduced to below 60 decibels. It is estimated that the project will reduce annual fuel consumption by approximately 200 metric tons and cut carbon emissions by 633 metric tons; in terms of operations and maintenance, it will achieve cost reductions and efficiency gains; and in safety management, it will enable digital and intelligent monitoring.
A representative from the Jiangsu Maritime Safety Administration noted that the implementation of this project provides valuable experience for the electrification of inland waterway vessels and will drive the green transition of shipping on the Yangtze River.
